IIT-D grabs big-pay placements
Sridhar Kumaraswami
New Delhi, October 1

As the reviving world economy brings with it large salary packages for IIT graduates, students in their final year can look

forward to at least Rs 3 lakh per annum. IIT graduates will, however, start facing campus interviews only from December,

instead of August, as the institutes are changing their placement schedule.

.This will be applicable for the batch which completes its course in 2006,. IIT Delhi.s training and placement

professor-in-charge Kushal Sen told HT. At present, placement begins in August for final-year students and goes on till May.

.We found that the start of campus recruitment in August disturbs teaching,. said Prof. Sen. Till a few years ago, the MTech

programmes were of one-and-a-half years. duration. .These students completed their course in December and, therefore,

recruitment began from August itself,. he said. .Now, the MTech programme is of two years. So, recruitment can begin from

December..

The shorter placement period also lessens the possibility of any company reneging on a deal . something that had, in fact,

happened during the recession three years ago. A prestigious company had gone back on its job offers made nearly a year in

advance. They were forced to relent later.

In the present situation, such problems are unlikely. During the on-going interviews, which began in August, companies have

been lapping up final-year BTech and MTech students. Of about 1,100 IITians recruited every year, about 250 have already

landed jobs.

.The highest package offered in these two months is about Rs 7.5 lakh per annum, offered by both McKinsey and Hindustan

Lever. The highest US dollar salary is $50,000, offered by the MNC, Capital-1. The average salary package so far is about Rs

4 lakh per annum,. said Prof. Sen. The lowest offered is about Rs 3 lakh per annum.
